Our top recommendation is to schedule a charter flight
directly from Santo Domingo or Puerto Plata's international
airports. There will be an airplane waiting for you when
you arrive, ready to fly you directly to Portillo - just
a 5 minute drive to Las Terrenas. It is the easiest, fastest,
and most scenic way to get Las Terrenas. Alternatively,
there are daily flights available from several cities within
the Dominican Republic. Please see details on pricing and
scheduling* below.

By rental car: Total estimated
time is about 7.5 hours
Rent a car at airport (many of our clients suggested making
a reservation through rent-a- car company homepages because
it would be cheaper than renting at the airports). If you
rent a car at Puerto Plata airport you take the road that
goes through Sosua, Cabarete, Rio San Juan, Cabrera, Nagua
and then Sanchez. It goes long the north coast the whole
way. There is only one road that hugs the coast the whole
way. That is the road you stay on. We know these directions
may not seem very detailed but few of the roads have names
or signs. But because they are so few streets, it's not
that difficult. And further more Dominicans live very close
to all the roads here and you will pass 100's of them on
this 4 hours drive. After you pass by Sanchez you will
see a small sign for Las Terrenas. Once you get on the
road for Las Terrenas you will start climbing over some
small mountains. That road takes about 30 minutes and is
hilly. Do not drive at night! There are few streets lights
and visibility is quite poor.
The turn off for Las Terrenas is about 3 or 4km after
Sanchez, right after a gas station. The highway or rather
what looks like a country road in the States is not marked
that well. The signs are too small. So, when you are leaving
towns or going through them you would have to ask people
the way to Las Terrenas and Samana. Car jackings, muggings
or robbery in cars is very rare in this country. Driving
in the Dominican Republic is fun and safe and the route
you will be taking is beautiful.
